An American Writer's Thoughts on Japanese Animation

Seasonal Selection – Witch Hat Atelier Episode 7

The worst volume-end cliffhanger, replicated in animation!

So, the episode is basically dedicated in its entirety to the rescue effort, which all the apprentices are allowed to help with. The adults do most of the real work, of course, and this is much to Agott’s frustration.

To her credit, we actually start to get some good development for Agott in this episode. After the adults leave to scout up and down the river, one of the rescued people, a boy roughly the age of the apprentice squad, gets himself nearly squashed under a boulder climbing down to pick up some of the goods from the wagon. Coco falls as well, but is able to tough it out.

Wondering what she should – or can – do we get Agott flashing back to her traumatic past where, evidently, she was seen as an untalented member of her family, and thus was treated like garbage, explaining her burning need to prove herself by working hard literally all the time and why she might not be particularly tolerant of others. She reflects and introspects and creates a diversion for Coco.

Coco uses the wall-breaker spell to smash the rock on the kid, and gets them both back up to the bank with levitation magic. Celebration, however, is short-lived. The Knights Moralis arrive, bind Agott and Coco, and declare that one of them must be a Brimhat.

The reason for this is that Coco’s spell seems to have had some unintended consequences, with the land far around all turning to sand and even the river being blasted to mist, clear signs of forbidden magic. Thus, the lead of the knights makes ready to erase Coco’s memory, and the episode cuts.

I know that this is one of my shorter summaries, but despite that this is an incredibly important incident, introducing elements that will continue to be critical as the story goes on and starting a pretty good redemption for Agott. She still acts tsundere at Coco once they’re having their moment of peace, but it’s clear now both that she’s warming up and that she has good reasons for being as harsh and driven as she has been, even if that doesn’t entirely excuse her behavior.

Naturally, of course, we know Coco’s story isn’t going to end here in episode 7, but this was also the exact cut of one of the volumes of the manga, and it’s one that’s a pain to wait through. At least this time, it’s only a week.
