Every side is bad,
And everywhere you’re outlawed
Time to change venue
So, the point of this episode is to get both main groups headed to Togetsu, a place briefly mentioned before (and in this episode, for that matter) as an independent theocratic city. On Yuito’s side, he and his team try to infiltrate the place that was holding Nagi again, only to get captured by brainwashed Nagi. Fubuki, who was also found out and needs to go rogue, rescues them. Karen shows up to gruffly invite them to his side while obliquely suggesting they go to Togetsu, seeing as they’re now considered enemies of the state by their superiors.
On Kasane’s side, she gets an overly long talking-to by her friends, recapping what we already know (though now with evidence of the link between Yuito and the Kunad Gate) and the fact that she clearly isn’t comfortable with the “easy” solution to Yuito, or the uncomfortable place that Naomi is in. At the end of the episode, they figure that ditching their current locale and making their way to Togetsu would be a neat thing to do, so I guess we’ll see everyone in Togetsu.
Along the way, we got some somewhat interesting information about Yuito. Apparently, he was originally a Dud (unable to use psionics at all) and received a treatment that, with a lot of luck since it usually doesn’t work, granted him the powers he has now. However, it’s also likely this will cause his brain to deteriorate, causing him to lose both his powers and his memories. Odd that Old Yuito in the future seemed to be doing fine, but I guess we’ll address that when we come to it.
And that… is the episode. I know I’m probably sounding like a broken record at this point, but this show really does need to pick up the pace. At just about every level, we’re wasting screen time. Scenes are longer and more repetitive than they need to be (the chief offender this week being the scene where everybody gives Kasane a pep talk; they say the same thing a few too many times while affirming their support), but there are also scenes that feel like padding in their entirety. Add it all together and this should probably have been the second half of episode 9. Find Naomi, find out about the drug that helps her and Yuito, get Yuito outlawed, everybody breaks with their factions and flees to Togetsu. That would be more like a reasonable pace to move the story forward at. As it stands, it’s hard to imagine that they’ll manage a satisfactory conclusion in a mere two episodes.
