Seasonal Selection – Kamitsubaki City Under Construction Episode 9

Despair Triumphs.

Plot-wise, this episode has fairly few beats, getting us to the conclusion of the ideas from the last episode. Haru transforms fully into a Tesseractor and goes ape, even destroying Agni in blind rage, acting only to protect the only mostly dead Sekai. Maxwell shows up, nabs Sekai, and outpowers Haru.

Then, Maxwell goes and spews more speeches at Koko, Rime, and Kafu, who have been having it out between themselves. Eventually he pulls them into an even deeper distortion realm. Koko fights him using some frankly rather impressive fight magic, but then gets brutally gunned down by a clone of her former familiar, Kugel. Rime demands answers, but gets nothing aside from her familiar Hastur self-sacrificing to try to reach her.

In the pit of this despair, Kafu decides to end everything with one broken song, morphing into… something between a Witchling, Tesseractor, and Eldritch God (or, more accurately, she just goes and steals a few pages of Evangelion notes) and taking out all of Kamitsubaki city along with. In the aftermath, Maxwell appears in the desert, declaring that this cycle in which everything was destroyed by a witchling’s song was the grain of sand he’d needed to find, once again proclaiming some rivalry with the unseen Sophia.

Throughout this, there was a thread where Sekai seemed to be getting insight on Maxwell, particularly Maxwell seeming to be hollow and even potentially in need of salvation, but it’s hard to know what to make of that.

And… most of what I said last week still applies. It’s just an extention of the misery that leaves us in the same place. Therefore, I’ll keep this week’s entry short and defer to my previous comments.
