An American Writer's Thoughts on Japanese Animation

Hundred Audio Commentary, Part 1

Back when I was just rating and reviewing shows on MAL, Hundred was the show that got the lowest marks from me. That wasn’t to say it was the show that I disliked the most or even that it was the show that did the most wrong. Rather, it earned that dubious distinction because, at the time I viewed it, I felt that it was the show that tried the least and achieved the least. Anything I liked less had more effort and ambition, at least.

Because the failures of Hundred are more about being lazy and predictable rather than anything I can really analyze in a deep sense (like, say, the curious failure of the comedy in Familiar of Zero: Knight of the Twin Moons), it didn’t leave a ton of room for a proper spoiler review, so instead I made… this.

Essentially, I watched the show again — this time with my wife who had never seen it before, and the whole time through we recorded our live thoughts and commentary. This was both to function as a sort of active audio review, and a sort of “Mystery Science Theater 3000” affair where you can synch your viewing with ours and have the commentary track actually commenting on what’s on screen. That’s sort of how it’s meant to be viewed/listened to/enjoyed.

Hundred consists of four arcs, each three episodes long. Because that seems like a good pace, we’ll be releasing three episodes of commentary every week on Wednesday until it’s down. Let me know what you all think! Hopefully, as more commentaries get done (Hundred was all in one sitting, a mistake that shan’t be repeated) we’ll get better at the dynamic and engaging audio, but I’d like to know who’s watching this and what they like or dislike about it. So like and comment on the video if you like it, or comment here and let me know how you feel. Without further adieu, the videos!
